This medal was created for Mairead Corrigan Maguire and Betty Williams when they were awarded the Norwegian People’s Peace Prize in 1976. The initiative came from the Norwegian media. More than £200,000 had been raised. Corrigan and Maguire received a gold medal each, and 5,000 copies were made. This is copy number 2265. The medal was designed by Øivind Hansen. In 1977, Corrigan and Williams were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 1976.
Corrigan and Williams became committed to the struggle for peace in Northern Ireland after an event in Belfast in August 1976. A member of the Provisional Irish Republican Army was shot and killed in a car by the British Army. The car veered onto the pavement, killing three children. Williams, who witnessed the accident, started a petition for peace, and Corrigan who was the aunt of the children, joined what became a movement against violence.
Mairead Corrigan Maguire donated her medal to the Nobel Prize Museum in 2013. - Pristagare
